The period between 1600 and 1800 produced some of the most exquisite women's attire.  European settlers established themselves in North America known as the Colonial period.  Styles of dress were determined by social expectations, fashion trends, wealth and status.

Ball gown were predominantly formal attire.  They were made of the best, and finest silk. Great effort was made to ensure the bodice was fitted properly over the corset.  Sleeves were designed with multiple ruffles that elegantly cascaded over the elbows.  Long skirts used yards of fabric, and most gowns were designed with the front skirts to open up showing the inner skirt which often match the gown.  Many gowns had removable triangular stomachers, while some gowns had the panel of the bodice stitched in place and closed with buttons

Chinese artisans made textiles specifically for export to Europe and America. This gown is an exceptional gown featuring hand-painted floral designs and silver outlines.  This textile would have been a luxury item.   This gown has been styled as a robe à la française, as the back of the gown has pleats at the shoulders that release into a graceful train. The mock stomacher buttons down the front. The skirt and petticoat originally had applied ruffles or flounces, perhaps removed to update the gown.

The serpentine, or meandering, lines in this brocaded silk are typical of 1760s design. The gown was later remodeled with the plunging neckline, edge-to-edge front closure, and S-curve silhouette that became popular after 1785.
