Butlers Pantries are not a room that you find in most common homes in America and Canada.  Although today if you were to walk through some of the new builders homes, the butlers pantry is becoming more of a feature.  A pantry is a room where china, linens, tableware and food are stored and serve as an additional storage space to the kitchen.

At one time, the pantry was where food was prepared.  Additional rooms were also common where meats and breads were stored before the modern fridge became so convenient. In the Victorian era, large estates maintained the use of separate rooms, each dedicated to a distinct stage of food preparation.  Food storage was done in a storeroom, while the kitchen was designated for cooking.  Before supermakets were so convenient, gardens were the main source of food, requiring handling excessive food from the garden to be preserved for the winter months.  Canning and storage was more common and almost a lost art in our modern age.  The pantry was often the the room with running water, and was where the messiest food preparation took place, such as cleaning and cutting raw meat.  Additional pantries housed china, glassware and silverware.

In America, pantries evolved from early Colonial American pantry cold room located in a corner of the house to a variety of pantries for self-sufficient farmsteads. Butler's pantries, were built between the dining room and kitchen of a middle class home.  In fact, many of the new home builders are returning to this 19th and early 20th century model.

Cold Pantries

In America, survivalists are starting to look at some of the colonial practices for cold pantries.  Eggs can be stored for many months with oil rubbed around the egg if it is kept in a cold pantry.  Before modern refrigeration was available the cold pantry perserved food.  The cold pantry usually consisted of a cabinet or cupboard with wooden-slat shelves which allowed air circulation.  In the summertime, the temperatures in the cold pantry would usually several degrees lower than the  temperature in the house, while in the wintertime, the temperature in the pantry would be considerably lower than the temperature found in the house. Breads, pastries, eggs and butter were common foodstocks kept in a cold pantry. Vegetables could be brought up from the root cellar in smaller amounts and stored in the cold pantry until they were ready to eaten.

Butler's Pantry

A butler's pantry was traditionally kept for storing china, glassware, cutlery, and storage.   The butlers pantry was also the area where silver was polished and cleaned.  The room would be used by the butler and other domestic staff; and it is often called a butler's pantry even in households where there is no butler.

In modern homes, butler's pantries are usually located between kitchens and dining rooms, and used as staging areas for serving meals. They commonly contain countertops, and storage for tableware, serving pieces, table linens, candles, and wine.  In some of the more upscale homes, many rooms may contain refrigerators, sinks, and even dishwashers.
